Commemorative coins marking the centenary of Armistice Day have been launched on the Isle of Man.

Distinctive 50 pence piece coins, featuring red poppies and the image of the soldier from the Douglas war memorial, will be distributed to students in full time education.

Two specially-minted £50 commemorative coins, made from pure silver and decorated with gold-plated poppies, have also been released.

One of these was presented to Tynwald President Steve Rodan – the other to Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson.

Both will be placed in prominent positions within the Legislative Buildings.

Mr Rodan said: “I take tremendous pleasure in accepting this wonderful gift on behalf of the Royal British Legion in commemoration of the Armistice.

“The Legion was established in the aftermath of the First World War to promote welfare and remembrance, and I can’t think of anything more tangible and worthwhile to mark the end of that conflict."
