IoM Archery Club Report - 15th October

by Barbara Harris

There was another good turn-out at Onchan on Sunday as archers of all ages assembled to shoot a Worcester round as part of the Club’s Scratch League. The Worcester comprises of 60 arrows shot in groups of five, on a black and white target (five spot for Compounds – single face for Recurve and Juniors) scoring 5 down to 1, with a maximum of 300.

Having re-configured his GPS from the Algarve, Billy Lightfoot managed to find his way to the Hub. Claims by older members of the club to have seen him shoot before on a Sunday could not be verified, but it was lovely to see him nevertheless. Billy lined up against Pete Mumford, Rhys Moore and Simon Musgrove in the Gents Compound division. He found the light in the hall challenging and this, combined with a slight illness, had an impact on his score. Recording a miss with one of his last five arrows Billy had to settle for last place. After a dip in form, Rhys Moore bounced back with a superb display of archery hitting the centre with every arrow to record a maximum score of 300. In spite of this, Rhys had to share the top spot with father David who turned up in the afternoon session and also maxed the round. The final step on the podium went to Simon Musgrove who just edged out Pete Mumford with his last arrow.

Lone Lady Compound Joy Gough put in a solid performance that was marred by an uncharacteristic miss halfway through the shoot.

In the Gents Recurve division Eric Lutes was once more in action after work commitments had prevented him from taking part the week before. Eric was shooting the round for the first time and his final score was good enough for third place. Having shot three rounds Eric can now be given a handicap. David Smith, after a slow start due to equipment problems, added 35 points to his pb for the round to finish fourth. Dave Berry elected to shoot a five spot target which probably put a dent in his final score, which was some way down on his best.

The win was taken by Danny Cowin who, in spite of being slightly the worse for wear, showed good form to record a score that was considerably higher than his nearest rival and just 4 points short of his pb. The Records Officer can’t help but wonder what Danny might achieve for the Club if he actually put in a bit of practice.

Colin Moore elected to shoot the round Barebow and put in a decent score given that this was only his second shoot of the Indoor season.
Barbara Harris put in another consistent round that was frustratingly just short of a pb.

In the afternoon Nathan Kinrade, Jacob Brookes and Joseph Reaney attempted to beat the score set by Toby Young in the morning session in the Junior Gents Recurve. Joseph Reaney finished just 2 points short of the target set by Toby and had to settle for second place. Jacob Brookes finished a little way down on his best but still managed to take third place, while Nathan Kinrade added 10 points to his pb for the round but had to settle for fourth.
