A local woman was killed in a road traffic collision in Kirk Michael yesterday evening.

The cyclist, who has not yet been officially named by police, was in collision with a Range Rover sport car. She was declared dead at the scene.

The car was being driven by another local woman who had an infant in the car with her. They were said to be shocked but unhurt.

The main road was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the scene. The collision occurred at about 6pm. Both the cyclist and the car had been travelling towards Ballaugh.

Police sergeant Andy Kneen said: 'We are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed this collision, and who have not yet given the police their details. There are early indications that the lady who died was in a party of three cyclists who had travelled along the TT course from Douglas. We also believe that the car had also travelled a similar route. We are keen to hear from anyone who noticed either party before they reached Kirk Michael.

'I would like to thank the many local residents who rallied round to render first aid, and assist the emergency services at the scene. I would also like to thank the travelling public and residents of Michael for the forbearance shown by them with regard to the road closure.'
